Recognition

Written & Directed by Helen Clemens

‘Recognition’ is a hyper-real, mystical and revolutionary fashion film shot in Hong Kong. Written and directed by Australian Film and Animation Director Helen Clemens. With her extraordinary talent and sophisticated visual style, Helen burst onto the commercial directing scene with her stunning animated SBS Films, which won her a Cannes Lions Young Directors in 2011, as well as Best Animation at New York Promax/BDA the same year. Commissioned by Creative Victoria, ‘Recognition’ is the first fashion film to showcase Australia’s First People designers and actors. The film was launched on December 5th 2018 at Hong Kong Business of Design Week, for which Melbourne was the official partner city. Melbourne Fashion Festival, the biggest fashion event in Australia on March 1-10th 2019, has recently awarded ‘Recognition’ as part of their Fashion Film Award series. The Australian Centre for the Moving Image will screen the film as part of the Melbourne Fashion Festival. During this time the film’s cinema release in Australia will be at Val Morgan Cinemas, Cinema Nova and The Astor Cinema, and as part of Virgin Australia In-Flight Entertainment.

Asked about the concept of the film, “The main concept for this film was to change culture for the future,” Helen answered clearly. “It feels like the past, present and future are brought together with the cutting-edge First Peoples fashion designs. The intension to create an ultra-modern fashion film which celebrates contemporary fashion. Also, the story is about the exchange of two cultures through the eyes of our First Peoples actors who are brought to the foreground amongst the fast-paced city of Hong Kong. Our First People actors continuously connect to Australia through the vivid colored fashions, accessories and designs. Ancient rhythms of the city not yielding to futuristic desires but existing harmoniously in all dimensions. Reworked with hyper-tech sensibilities, traditional exchanges between Hong Kong culture and Australia’s First People are represented in this story.”
