Over the past decade, Sam Spiegel has produced acclaimed albums for artists likes Yeah Yeah Yeahs, scored a series of feature-length films, and built his own award-winning commercial music company. Along with composing an alternative opera, the L.A.-based musician also headed up N.A.S.A.: a genre-smashing musical project featuring the likes of David Byrne, M.I.A., and Ol’ Dirty Bastard. After years of cultivating a polymathic career that’s also included his ongoing work as a globally in-demand DJ, Spiegel is now set to deliver his first musical release under his own name.
On “Mutant Brain”—his debut release as Sam Spiegel—that vision manifests as a frenetic and futuristic take on bass-heavy electronic music. Made in collaboration with Houston-based producer Ape Drums, the track features furious guest vocals by Assassin (a Jamaican dancehall artist known for his work with Kanye West and Kendrick Lamar). “The idea was to make something that feels like it came from some crazy alien world, something super-aggressive that hits you right in the chest,” says Spiegel. “That’s why we wanted Assassin—we knew he could just eat the track alive, which is exactly what happened.”
Though Spiegel wrote “Mutant Brain” especially for a commercial for Parisian fashion label Kenzo—a spot directed by his brother, filmmaker Spike Jonze—he also created a club version that delves even deeper into sonic terrain that’s intricately composed but viscerally charged.
